A Butler man was arrested on charges he choked and assaulted his girlfriend during a domestic dispute Saturday at their home in the 300 block of Mercer Street.

Richard J. Nolan Jr., 49, was arraigned on a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.

Police were called about 3 a.m. for Nolan reportedly pushing around his girlfriend. The woman told police that the trouble began after the defendant returned home intoxicated.

He is accused of grabbing her around the throat with his hands. He also allegedly picked her up and pushed her into a wall, causing pain in her left shoulder, according to court documents.
