Community center named after officer

DUNMORE — A northeastern Pennsylvania borough is naming the road between its community center and Little League fields after a state trooper killed in a barracks ambush last September.

Dunmore says it will dedicate Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II Way on Saturday. Dickson lived in Dunmore and his sons play baseball at the borough fields.

State Sen. Lisa Baker has introduced a bill to name an Interstate 84 exit for the slain trooper.

The 38-year-old Dickson was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass was severely wounded Sept. 12 outside the Blooming Grove barracks.

Police arrested 31-year-old survivalist Eric Frein after a 48-day manhunt in the Pocono Mountains. Frein told police Dickson’s slaying was an “assassination.”

He’s pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, terrorism and other charges.

Eaglet hatches in central Pa. nest

HANOVER — One of the eggs in a central Pennsylvania nest that has been watched by thousands of people on live-streaming video has hatched.

The hatchling in the nest in Codorus State Park in York County was first seen Tuesday morning, partially still in the egg that had split in half.

Officials say the eaglet won’t be ready to fly on its own — or fledge — until late June or early July.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission installed a live-streaming “eagle cam” focused on the nest in December.

Since then, according to spokesman Travis Lau, say more than 640,000 people from across the country have watched the live stream, and many of them check in daily.

The nest produced two eaglets in 2014, but only one survived long enough to fly away.

Anti-war activist’s visit draws critics

HARRISBURG — Penn State President Eric Barron is getting a raft of criticism from lawmakers angry over an on-campus appearance by a co-founder of the violent anti-war group Weather Underground.

At a budget hearing Tuesday, four members of the Senate Appropriations Committee grilled Barron about the appearance of William Ayers at programs at the Penn State Dickinson Law School earlier this month.

The now-defunct Weather Underground opposed the Vietnam War and claimed responsibility for several bombings.

GOP Sens. John Eichelberger and Kim Ward want know how the university can stop future appearances by people whose actions are offensive.
