Butler County Junior Miss Christine Marty
Freeport student earns $5,000 scholarship

A Freeport High School student took home a crown and the title Butler County Junior Miss 2008 during the annual scholarship competition held Saturday at Butler Intermediate High School.

Christine Marty, daughter of Dr. John and Marion Marty of Sarver, won the title, competing against 16 other contestants in the categories of interview, scholastic achievement, fitness, talent and poise.

Marty was awarded a $5,000 scholarship with her title. She also took one of two prizes in the fitness category and received first prize for the Bowl-a-thon event and advertising. For her talent, she did a jazz dance to "I Got You."

In addition to the scholarship, Marty will proceed to the state pageant Dec. 1 in Johnstown.

The first runner-up was Britney Vokish, daughter of Paul and Donna Vokish of Valencia. A student at Mars High School, she received a $1,500 scholarship. She also received prizes in the fitness and self expression categories.Second runner-up was Butler High School student Stephanie Cicero, daughter of Stephen and Cecelia Cicero of Butler. She received a $1,000 scholarship and an award in the interview category.Winners in other categories included Skye Sankey and Elisa Nesbitt, both Butler High School students, who won in the talent category; Chelsie Markle of Butler High School, who won in the scholastic achievement category; Butler High School student Maura Keasey, who won in the self expression category; Christina Wick of Karns City High School, who received the spirit award and Knoch High School student Alexandra "Lexie" Elliott, who had the highest ticket sales.

Other competitors included Sloane Lusk, Megan Seger and Elizabeth Marie Burris, all of Knoch High School; Gina Zidek of Freeport High School; Brittany Scott and Kristen Kowalik of Butler High School; Samantha Weston of Mars High School; and Calley Bridges of Slippery Rock High School.
