Ian Bell
Ian Drew Bell, 70, passed away Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, at Butler Memorial Hospital, from complications after heart surgery.
Drew was born in Butler on June 3, 1951, and was the son of Ivan and Margaret “Peg” Best Bell.
He was a graduate of Karns City High School and received his degree from California University of Pennsylvania.
A retired industrial arts and wood shop teacher at Karns City High School, he was a passionate wood craftsman. His love for the craft was dedicated to any student willing to learn. In his early years of teaching, Drew helped students build anything from a simple shelf or stool to beautiful elaborate gun cases, grandfather clocks or other furniture. He then took the students and their pieces, and entered them into various competitions, often winning prizes, and high praise.
Drew, and his wife, Susie, until her passing in March, loved traveling to the New England states, especially Acadia National Park, where their combined love of nature always exceeded their anticipation.
He was a jack-of-all-trades, from machinist to woodworking, to building. However, his most ardent pastime was the history of the oil industry in Western Pennsylvania, especially the Petroleum Valley area, for which he spent hours amassing information.
Drew is survived by his brothers, Ivan Keith (Mary) Bell and Eric Joel (Patricia) Bell; his niece, Rachael Kathryn Bell (Andrew) Landstedt; and cousins, Margaret “Peggy” King and Larry (Joanne) King.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan Urish Bell, who passed in March 2021; and his mother and father, Ivan and Margaret Bell.
