Seniors Shine
SLIPPERYROCK— Kelly Benson was warned about this night.
People told the senior guard on the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team that her high school career would zoom by as quickly as a 2-on-1 fast-break.
Don't blink, they'd say, or you'll miss it.
When she was walking to half court with her parents on her flanks Monday night at Slippery Rock High School for the Senior Night ceremony, those truths became very evident.
“Everyone says time goes faster than you can even imagine,” Benson said. “This is one of those nights you literally wait for your entire life and when it gets here, you are like, 'Dang. What?'”
“We should have listened when they said that,” added Slippery Rock senior guard Anna Kadlubek, laughing.
Benson, Kadlubek, Hallie Raabe and Maryann Ackerman — the four seniors for the Rockets — took care of business as they usually do as Slippery Rock led 20-0 at one point on the way to a 54-18 win over Franklin in its home opener.
School officials decided to hold the celebration for the seniors before the home opener because of the uncertainly surrounding COVID-19.
“COVID puts a question mark on everything,” Raabe said.
There is little question, though, that the Rockets (5-0) are all-in this season with their talented “quadruplets,” as coach Amber Osborn calls them.
Kadlubek scored 11, Ackerman 10 and Raabe 7 to lead Slippery Rock against overmatched Franklin.
Ackerman missed all last season with a knee injury.
“With Maryann back, I keep telling them I think they are on the brink of something special,” Osborn said. “We missed a piece of us last year not having Maryann on the floor.”
All four bring something distinctly unique to the Rockets.
Kadlubek is lightning fast, can handle the ball and can shoot. Raabe is fierce inside the paint — evident by the shiner she sported under her right eye Monday — and also has an outside shooting touch. Ackerman is the enforcer on defense and can also go on torrid scoring runs. And Benson is the sharp-shooter and a good ball handler to boot.
They are all also generous passers.
“They really don't care who scores,” Osborn said.
The quadruplets agreed.
“It makes it really fun,” Ackerman said.“Anna could be the star of the team and score 35 a night,” Ackerman said, “but she'd be REALLY tired at the end of it,” she added, prompting loud laughter from the group.
Slippery Rock faces a big test Thursday at Grove City. The Eagles beat the Rockets in the District 10 championship game last season.
The four seniors, though, have tackled more serious things recently.
They were worried COVID-19 would cost them their final campaigns. It still might.
Battling though that uncertainty has made them stronger.
“At first we were a little bit upset because everything was changing and everything was up in the air,” Kadlubek said. “Now, we're used to it. We just go with the flow. It's out of our control, except for taking the precautions we need to take. Everything could get shut down tomorrow, so we play like it's our last game.”
