Hiring of part-time officers ratified
The Lancaster Township Board of Supervisors ratified the hiring of two part-time police officers during a meeting Monday.
The officers, Adam Drake and Michael Murcko, were hired as part-time officers July 1. The department hopes Murcko can start patrolling in September, while the training process for Drake will take another month.
Police Sgt. Michael Cornell said the only limiting factor to Murcko beginning his shifts is the current lack of a vest for him, which he hopes will be resolved by Sept. 1. Cornell said the department may be able to get a vest, or they might be able to use one provided by the Jackson Township Police Department.
At a July 20 meeting, supervisors approved an amendment to the police union's contract with the township that gave the board discretion to offer part-time officers pay rates up to $24.07, and thereafter following the bargaining agreement's pay scale of 80 percent of a full-time officer's wages.
The two officers will be paid that starting wage.
“There's a demand out there for good part-time officers,” board President Joe Pesniak said Monday. “We were trying to attract more officers to fill out the schedule.”
Cornell said the two hires put the department at six part-time officers, who complement the department's four full-time officers.
Supervisors also approved a land development application for a clubhouse at the Arden Woods development, which will consist of a 2,600-square-foot clubhouse and 38 parking spaces. The residential development, which consists of more than 280 houses just off Route 19, is spread out enough to necessitate a number of parking spaces, township engineer Tom Thompson said, but fewer than 40 is a sufficient number.“Typically, in those plans, a lot of people walk to them (the clubhouse),” he said. “This one is a little more remote, but I still think that parking would be adequate.”
