SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Veteran NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has awarded a grant to the Sacramento Police Department that has allowed it to add one new dog to its K-9 unit.Though the longtime Pittsburgh quarterback was sidelined by injury nearly the entire season, Roethlisberger pledged to distribute grants toward the K-9 units of police and fire agencies in the NFL cities and surrounding communities of each road game in 2019, choosing the recipients based on proposals submitted by departments nationwide.With the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Steelers in September a couple of hours away in Santa Clara, the Sacramento Police Department requested and received one of those grants, according to a Thursday news release by The Giving Back Fund, the parent organization of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation.

PITTSBURGH — Outfielder Guillermo Heredia agreed Thursday to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.Heredia, who turns 29 on Jan. 31, hit .225 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 231 plate appearances last season for the Tampa Bay Rays, who declined to offer him a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline and allowed him to become a free agent. He was acquired by the Rays from Seattle after the 2018 season.Heredia has a .240 average with 17 homers and 75 RBIs in four major league seasons with the Mariners and Rays.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia center Joel Embiid will have surgery Friday for a torn ligament in a finger in his left hand and will be evaluated in one to two weeks.Embiid injured the radial collateral ligament in the ring finger in the first half Monday night against Oklahoma City. Embiid’s overlapped his pinkie to the point that it seemed he had his fingers crossed. He played most of the game with his finger taped.Staff and wire reports
