Knoch, Mars facing new foe

Move over, Knoch and Mars. Here comes Freeport.

The Yellowjackets and their 65-match section winning streak — longest such active volleyball streak in the WPIAL — are moving from Section 6-AA to Section 2-AA this season.

Freeport has not lost a section match in years. Knoch, Mars and Ambridge tied for the Section 2-AA title last season.

“This will definitely be more of a challenge for us,” Yellowjacket coach Tom Phillips said. “We had been walking through our section with a bunch of 3-0 wins.”

Knoch coach Diane Geist, entering her 26th season, said the addition of Freeport should elevate everybody's play.

“This already tough section has gotten a lot tougher,” Geist said.

Last season, Knoch grabbed a share of the section title for the first time since 2007. Freeport was 21-0 last year before losing to Hopewell in the WPIAL Class AA championship game.
