Double Trouble

Slippery Rock quarterback Vito Pilosi (4) has developed into a dual threat — running and throwing the football — behind center for the Rockets this season.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Three completions.

Three touchdowns.

That was the kind of night it was for Slippery Rock High junior quarterback Vito Pilosi in a 55-31 romp over Titusville Friday night.

“Nothing wrong with that,” said Rockets' coach Larry Wendereusz.

It's been an evolution in plain sight for Pilosi in a Slippery Rock offense that has made significant strides this season.

Friday was the culmination of that work.

Not only did Pilosi throw for 209 yards and three touchdowns, he also rushed for 104 yards and another score in the rout.

Pilosi has completed 36-of-77 passes for 600 yards and seven touchdowns this season with only two interceptions.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound quarterback has also rushed for 346 yards and four touchdowns in his breakout campaign.

“I've just gotten in the weight room and I'm bigger and I feel stronger and my arm feels stronger,” Pilosi said. “Props to my coaches for helping me.”

It's been a stark contrast for Pilosi, who struggled at times last season when he began sharing time at quarterback with Jake Shaffer.

The Slippery Rock offense as a whole had a difficult time gaining traction in 2017.

“Last year it was the Grove City game that I got thrown into,” Pilosi said. “Grove City is Grove City. They're really good and are always good and it was a scary feeling getting thrown into that game last year not having as many reps.”

Wendereusz acknowledged that perhaps Pilosi was rushed last season.

Ultimately, though, the experience Pilosi gained last year has helped him in 2018.

“I think so,” Wendereusz said. “Last year when he was back there he got to see game speed. This year he understands how fast it's happening out there.”

Pilosi has played quarterback extensively since youth football days in the Slippery Rock program.

This year, though, he's been asked to throw the ball more than he has ever before.

And he relishes that chance.

“All my youth career all we did was run the ball,” Pilosi said. “It feels really good to be able to hit one of our big-play receivers and watch them catch and run.”

Wendereusz hopes to unleash the offense even more.

“We're getting there,” the coach said. “We talk in the coach's room constantly, but we have our kids on offense one hour every day. It's not what we know, it's what the kids know. If you give them too much, they'll be swimming. We want them to get the play and know exactly what they have to do.”

That's been the key for Pilosi, whose understanding of the offense has improved each practice.

“I feel so much stronger mentally,” Pilosi said. “I feel like I've grown up a lot.”

Pilosi is excited to see what he and the rest of the offense can do with each passing game.

The Rockets (4-2, 0-2) have a big contest on tap Friday when they travel to face Conneaut (4-2, 1-1).

“Up front, our guys have played great. They're moving people,” Pilosi said. “Our running backs have played well and we have good receivers. I think now I'm a dual threat and I think teams have to worry about the run and the pass now. It's a great feeling when the offense is clicking.”
