SEWICKLEY — The last sound the Freeport girls soccer team wanted to hear in what could be their final game of the season was a repeating thud.

In the first round of the WPIALClass AA playoff game against Quaker Valley, Kayla Eckman hit the post four times, and the Yellowjackets found themselves in a 1-all tie late in the second half.

But Andrea Ferko and Kyrene Haynes netted goals in the final 11:50 that gave Freeport a 3-1 victory over the Quakers at Chuck Knox Field.

"At 1-1, I was concerned," said Freeport coach Sean Glackin. "But we were not going to back out of what we do.

"We got goals from Andrea and Kyrene. They're players who have stepped up. It's not what you'd expect at this time,"Glackin added.

The Yellowjackets (16-3-1) have relied on players such as Eckman (32 goals and 21 assists) and Courtney Boroski (25 goals), but the Yellowjackets will accept a playoff win any way they can.

Quaker Valley (8-9-2) had allowed a goal to Eckman with 19:16 left in the first half, but then kept Freeport off the board for the next 48 minutes.

"We never feel a game is ours for the taking," said Quakers coach Kristen Steffy. "I always felt we work hard. Freeport had opportunities. We had opportunities.

"I felt we possessed the ball well, and they did, too,"Steffy added.

Two minutes after Eckman's goal, Quaker Valley's Maddy Kelley almost knotted the game when she had a breakaway opportunity, but Freeport goalie Emily Thompson caught her hard grounder.

With 7:39 left in the first half, Eckman fired a shot that Quakers goalie Danielle Lindsay tapped away in the air. The ball flew back, hit the top of the crossbar and bounced away.

That was one of four that hit the post, including two in the second half. Eckman hit the post with 34:24 left in regulation, but nearly 6:30 later, the Quakers' lone senior, Jessica Aleshire, scored the equalizer from the front of the net off a header.

"We made some little adjustments," said Steffy. "Obviously, we needed a goal and we did that. We did what we had to."

With 25:10 left, Eckman hit the crossbar again, leaving Freeport to wonder what it would take to get another score.

Quaker Valley had two golden opportunities to take the lead, the latter when Lauren Lemieux shot wide left after being left alone in front of the net with 15:28 left.

Freeport finally took control from that point, and when Eckman's pass to the front of the net found Ferko, who had Lindsay make a commitment to the ball, then slipped past and scored with 11:50 to play.

Haynes goal with 4:13 left sealed the win.

"I told my assistant coach if it goes to 1-1 and we end up losing, we deserved to lose," said Glackin. "But we put on more pressure and we really responded."

Notes: Thompson finished with seven saves and Lindsay had five ... Freeport will play Greensburg Central Catholic on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
