IMPERIAL — Think about all of the hard work and determination it takes to go through an entire season undefeated.

How must it feel to be part of such an exclusive group?

Thanks to Seneca Valley, members of the Peters Township girls soccer team will never know.

The Raiders scored a goal in each half and ended the Indians' season with a 2-1 win in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals Thursday night at West Allegheny High School.

SV will face Penn-Trafford, a 1-0 winner over Hampton, in the semifinals at a date, time and site to be determined.

Lauren Royal's first half goal gave the Raiders (15-3-1) the lead and Catherine Messmer added an insurance goal in the 55th minute of play that proved to be the game-winner.

With 1:03 left in the game, the Indians (21-1) finally got on the board when Hannah Weyrick found the back of the net.

But while Peters Township avoided the shutout, it could not avoid ending an otherwise great season far too soon.

"(Peters Township) has. what, three players with at least 25 goals?" said SV coach Dave Sylvester. "Our defense's play deserves a lot of credit. They came up big tonight."

"Seneca Valley certainly outworked us," said Indians coach Pat Vereb.

The two teams met earlier in the season, with Peters Township coming away with a 4-2 road win Sept. 29.

Entering Thursday's game, the Indians had outscored their opponents 149-7.

"We weren't used to seeing that kind of speed at the top," Sylvester said. "We put an extra girl back to help out with double-teams."

It worked.

Seneca Valley goalkeeper Keara Lydon was forced to make only seven saves against one of the most potent offenses in the WPIAL, if not the state.

Right from the start, it was the Raiders playing with more hustle.

And though SV had the scoring chances to show for their effort, they didn't have the goal until the 30th minute of play.

Junior midfielder Aleisha Rees sent the ball in close to the Indians' goal and Royal headed in only the second goal scored on Peters Township in 10 games.

"That's all we talked about, getting that first goal," said Sylvester. "They jumped on us the first time we played them and we needed to do the same tonight.

"We knew that their back line was weak," he added.

Peters Township's best scoring chances came early in the second half, but if it wasn't SV's defense thwarting each opportunity, it was Lydon making a save.

"We came out in the second half and had our chances, but we weren't able to make anything stick," said Vereb.

Then, if the Indians weren't discouraged enough, they were hurled into panic mode when Messmer's laser shot from 30 yards out made it 2-0.

"It was a rebound off of a corner kick," said Messmer, a junior midfielder. "The ball was right there for me and bam! ... Wow, it was amazing."

Notes: Peters Township goalkeeper Megan Junker made seven saves. ... After not getting past the first round of the WPIAL playoffs in his first six seasons at Seneca Valley, Sylvester now has the Raiders in the district semifinals.
