JACKSON TWP — A battle of the top girls soccer teams in WPIAL Section 2-AAA turned out to be a lopsided affair.

Five different Seneca Valley players scored goals as the Raiders outplayed visiting North Allegheny, 5-1 at NexTier Stadium Thursday evening.

The girls showdown was the first game of a doubleheader. In the boys contest, Seneca Valley and Pine-Richland battled to a 1-all tie.

Kate Kelly assisted Mandy Cerminara's goal to put SV's girls up 1-0 midway through the first half.

Kelly then scored on a pass from Madison Kozlowski that gave the Raiders (7-0-1, 5-0) a two-goal edge at halftime.

NA goalkeeper Rachel Middleman was forced to make eight saves in the first half. Seneca Valley's Keara Lydon made three.

"We do a lot of scouting and we knew what formations NA was going to throw at us," said SV coach Dave Sylvester. "We talked about how to attack it and we did."

Kozlowski's goal 4:51 into the second half was very big in Sylvester's eyes.

"At halftime, we told the girls that NA would really be pushing their attack to try and score," he said. "Then we scored early in the second half to go up 3-0, and I thought NA became flat after that. It was a big goal, scoring that early in the second half."

Mandy Kasperski later scored on a penalty kick and Erica McGoogan capped SV's scoring in the 64th minute.

NA (5-2, 3-2) avoided the shutout when forward Katie Hohmann beat Lydon in the 75th minute.

Also getting assists for the Raiders were Grace Emmerling and Morgan Williams.

Lydon ended the night with five saves.

Middleman had 11 stops for the Tigers, who had Alexis Aiken in net in the final minutes.

The Tigers host the Raiders Oct. 12.

Boys Soccer Seneca Valley 1, Pine-Richland 1

The Raiders and Rams must wait until their rematch Oct. 13 at P-R to settle things.

Both teams had good scoring chances in the two 10-minute overtimes, but SV goalkeeper Justin McAtee and P-R's Nick Donnelly came up with crucial saves.

"I think I speak for everyone on the team — we should have won this game," said Raiders coach George Williams. "I'm sure Pine-Richland is saying the same thing. But if you're a competitor, walking off the field with a tie is dissatisfying."

The Rams led for much of the night on the strength of Steve Trempus' goal 3:37 into the game.

SV freshman forward Ryan Vilella scored the equalizer in the 51st minute.

The Raiders were attempting to control the ball in the left corner of their offensive zone and didn't seem to be an immediate threat to Donnelly when Vilella got his foot into a high, arcing shot that the former leaped for in vain.

"Ryan's on an Olympic development team. That's the kind of play he's bringing to the table," said Williams.

"Overall, I thought Nick played well," said Rams coach Jon Conner of his goaltender. "But the goal, that was just a mental mistake.

"It was a fair game between two good teams," added Conner. "I thought the tempo of the game was in our favor at the end. We had some chances. Nothing was really settled here tonight, but an away point is always big."

Donnelly made 10 saves for the Rams (4-3-1, 3-1-1), while McAtee had 14 for the Raiders (5-2-1, 2-1-1).
