BUTLER TWP — Seneca Valley girls soccer team wrapped up the 2009 regular season with a 2-1 win at Butler Monday night.

For their efforts, the Raiders earned not only a victory, but a bit of history as well.

The win capped an unblemished Section 2-AAA season with a record of 14-0, 17-0-1 overall.

"As long as I've been here, we've never gone undefeated in our section games and I don't believe it's ever happened," said ninth-year SV coach Dave Sylvester. "We were thinking about that tonight. But even more than that, the WPIAL playoff pairings meeting is (Wednesday). You don't want to lose a game right before that."

Leading 1-0 at halftime, SV's Mandy Cerminara scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal early in the second half.

The score gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead before Butler pulled to within 2-1 when freshman midfielder Alexa Gray scored her first varsity goal 13 minutes later.

"(Gray) started out as a forward, but we moved her to (center midfielder)," said Golden Tornado coach Sara Lettrich. "She's played great this year. She's pretty small, but plays big."

The Raiders took a 1-0 edge into halftime after Kate Kelly received a crossing pass from Mandy Kasperski two minutes before the break.

A Butler defender battled Kelly for possession, but in the process, the ball slipped by Tornado goalkeeper Taylor Troyan, who ended the game with 12 saves.

"I thought she had a fantastic night," Sylvester said of Troyan. "We were in on her a lot and she made some great saves."

Troyan's counterpart, SV's Keara Lydon, made six saves.

Sylvester is hoping his team is healthy by the time SV plays its first playoff game, most likely early next week.

"A lot of the girls still aren't completely over the bug that's been going around," he said. "That's why a lot of them are riding with their parents and not on the bus.

"Even though some of the girls aren't 100 percent, we kept coming after (Butler) tonight," he added. "We ended up with the number of scoring chances I thought we'd get, but I was a little disappointed we didn't follow through on some of them."

The Tornado (6-10-2, 5-8-1) were in the playoff race until a late-season slump in section play.

But for Lettrich, in her first year leading the team, she saw many positives from the 2009 squad.

"We played some young girls and everyone stepped up," she said. "Most of our losses were by one or two goals. We hung in there."
