IMPERIAL — Entering the state playoffs with a 21-1 record, the Mars boys soccer team hasn't found itself behind often — but that was the situation facing the Planets Tuesday night.

With Harbor Creek leading 1-0 with 12 minutes left in a PIAA Class AA first-round battle, Planets senior forward Ryan McKenzie scored the tying goal.

Then in the 18th minute of overtime, junior midfielder Yulian Lutsiv took control of a weak goal kick and, from 30 yards out, sent a shot past Huskies goalkeeper Josh Richardson into the upper left corner of the net to give the Planets a 2-1 win at West Allegheny High.

"I didn't think it was going in at first, but the ball dipped just a bit at the right time," said Lutsiv.

Mars (22-1) will play Palmyra, a 5-0 winner over Westmont Hilltop, in the state quarterfinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

"This is the first time we've come from behind to win this year," said Planets coach Chris Knauff. "The only other time we trailed in a game was against Upper St. Clair (a 2-0 loss Sept. 11). It was good to see us pass this test."

Harbor Creek (15-4-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Carter Tyzinski scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.

"After they scored, we stuck to our game plan a bit," said Knauff. "But then with about 15 minutes to go, we started sending more kids up front."

It wasn't long after that when McKenzie scored following a throw-in from Lutsiv.

In the middle of a crowd in front of the net, McKenzie controlled a rebound and beat Richardson, who ended the game with 16 saves and returned to action twice following an injury.

The Huskies struggled to get a push on offense in the last 48 minutes.

Mars goalkeeper Robbie Sigurdsson made six saves in regulation and two in overtime.

"After (the Huskies) scored to take the lead, they really focused on just playing defense," said Knauff. "Even after we scored, they didn't come out of that and we seemed more confident after tying it up."

In the 17 minutes of overtime before Lutsiv's score, Mars had seven legitimate scoring opportunities.

"We were getting frustrated," Lutsiv said. "We had so many shots, but we just couldn't finish. But that just made us more determined."

Harbor Creek coach Joe DiSanto was unavailable for comment.

Saturday's quarterfinal will be a rematch of the 2007 PIAA title game that was won by Palmyra 2-0.
