State readies extra unemployment money

Pennsylvanians receiving unemployment insurance benefits may begin receiving an extra $300 each week as soon as Tuesday, according to the state Department of Labor & Industry.

That money comes from the federal stimulus package passed by Congress in December, which automatically adds $300 to each unemployment claimants' payment under the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program.

Labor & Industry Acting Secretary Jennifer Berrier announced Friday that as many as 127,000 Pennsylvanians will soon begin to see the extra money.

Workers who received additional benefits under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance programs, which were part of the federal CARES Act passed in March, will not immediately see the additional benefit, according to Berrier.

The secretary said Labor & Industry is awaiting information from the federal Department of Labor as to how to provide benefits to workers who received compensation under one of those prior programs.

“We're urging the federal Department of Labor to give us the information we need to make the required changes to the program,” Berrier said in a Friday statement. “Once we get it, we'll work as quickly as possible to get the extra $300 weekly payments to people in the PUA and PEUC programs.”

When the state receives that guidance from the federal government, it will backdate the benefits to relevant claimants to Jan. 2, according to Labor & Industry

Pennsylvanians will be eligible to claim federal unemployment benefits for the claim weeks ending Jan. 2 through March 13. Claimants will not need to apply for the additional funds.
