SRU pulls off upset
The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team put up 47 points in the second half on the way to a 64-54 road upset of Mercyhurst University Wednesday night.
The victory was The Rock’s first at Mercyhurst since the PSAC playoffs in 2011. The SRU win also snapped the Lakers’ eight-game winning streak.
Both teams struggled mightily in the first half with The Rock (11-10, 6-9) leading 17-16 at the break.
SRU shot 56.5 percent from the field in the second half.
Malcolm Richardson led Slippery Rock with 25 points.
CCAC-Boyce 100, Butler County Community College 75 — Austin Miller (26 points, 11 assists) and Jake Anderson (11 points, 15 rebounds) both tallied a double-double for the Pioneers (2-18, 2-5). Ken Snead scored 27 points in defeat.
Women’s BasketballSlippery Rock was defeated 83-78 at Mercyhurst, despite a career-high 28 points from junior guard Lexi Carpenter.The Rock trailed for much of the game, but had battled to a tie at 58 by the end of the third quarter. The Lakers then outscored SRU 25-20 in the final period.Audrey Stapleton added 13 points for The Rock (10-10, 7-8) and Ciara Patterson scored 11.
