Freeport reaches semifinals

VALENCIA — Keith Smilowitz scored a key shorthanded goal in the third period and Tyler Lang picked up his second shutout of the season Monday night as Freeport advanced in the PIHL Class A playoffs.

The Yellowjackets (15-3-1) defeated McDowell, 4-0, at the Frozen Pond.

Despite outshooting the Trojans 47-9 on the night, Freeport carried a scant 1-0 lead into the final period. Caleb Hoffman scored the Yellowjackets’ first goal, off an assist from Marcus Trask in the second frame.

Smilowitz followed up his shorthanded tally — which gave Freeport a 2-0 lead — with an even strength goal 25 seconds later. Trask assisted on the shorthanded goal. Jake Suwan scored Freeport’s final goal.

Cameron Baniewicz made 43 saves in a losing effort for McDowell (5-12-2).

Freeport advances to the Class A semifinal round April 14.

Indiana 5, North Catholic 1 — The Little Indians (18-0) stayed undefeated in another Class A quarterfinal, scoring three times in the first period.

Danny Williams and Ben Nettleton scored on the power play to get Indiana on the board. Nettleton added two assists in the contest.

Tay Melis scored North Catholic’s lone goal in the second period, finding the net on a power play. The Trojans end their season at 10-8-1.

Indiana had a 40-12 edge in shots on goal. Connor Bridges made 35 saves for North Catholic.
