Gymnastics coach charged

BUTLER TWP — A Sarver man and gymnastics coach has been charged with multiple felonies amid allegations that he engaged in illicit touching and sexual contact with a pupil.

Keith R. Callen, 45, of 117 Sarver Road, has been charged by state police in Butler with sexual assault by sports official, volunteer or employee of nonprofit or for-profit organization, aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and indecent assault. The charges were filed April 26 in an Allegheny County district court, and reported today.

According to a court document, the charges come after a student alleged that Callen improperly touched her on numerous occasions and had sex with her twice — once in the parking lot of an Adams Township gas station; and again in the parking lot of Home Depot in Butler Township. The student was 16 and 17 years old when those incidents allegedly occurred.

According to court documents, Callen had been coaching the student since 2010, when she was 12 years old, and had a history of saying inappropriate things and giving inappropriate gifts to the student.

According to online court records, Callen will appear before Allegheny County District Judge Tom Swan June 8 for a preliminary hearing.
