County Sports HOF announces inductions

1991 Butler WPIAL hoop title team, 10 individuals entering Hall April 13

BUTLER TWP — Three times since 2000, the Butler boys basketball team reached the WPIAL championship game.

Each of those trips ended in defeat — showing how difficult it is to polish off such a title run.

The 1991 Golden Tornado did win the WPIAL basketball crown and will be inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame April 13 at the Butler Days Inn as a result.

That team won a program-record 27 games while losing only four. It was coached by Mark Jula, a member of three Hall of Fames already. Pat McClellan was Jula's assistant coach at Butler.

Current Butler boys basketball coach Matt Clement played on that 1991 squad, as did Shawn Bellis, who saw his Tornado career scoring record snapped by Ethan Morton this season. Bellis' record of 1,466 points stood for 25 years.

Current Karns City boys hoop coach Chris Bellis was also on that 1991 team, as was current Butler assistant coach Don Hilliard.

Other players on that team were Mike Beichner, Chris McMichael, Doug Brink, Danny Heiman, Dave Wingfield, Ron Zawrotuk, Larry Garvin, Jaron Hilovsky, Matt McClelland, Rich McClellan and Aaron Sease.
