Local company takes part in day of light
A local company is participating in an international event that celebrates an element of life often taken for granted: light.
II-VI, which has a plant in Clinton Township, is participating in the International Day of Light on Saturday by posting three light-related videos over the weekend on social media platforms for all to view.
Amy Wilson, II-VI communications director, said Saturday marks the company's first participation in the International Day of Light, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
The International Day of Light is held each year on May 16 because it is the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by American physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. “II-VI has been making optics for CO2 lasers for nearly 50 years, so it's a great thing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the laser,” Wilson said.
The videos, which Wilson said are available on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, demonstrate the grand opening of II-VI's new museum-quality exhibit space at its plant in China, a montage of a laser cutting through solid steel and five “enlightening” facts on the laser itself.
Light is celebrated on the International Day of Light due to its role in science, culture and art, education, sustainable development and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy, according to lightday.org.
