Knoch adding 6 to its Hall of Fame
JEFFERSON TWP — The Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame has announced its third induction class.
The six honorees — Knoch graduates Stan Crouch, Laurie Zendron Tresky, Rob Voltz, Hope McCorkle and Amy McCall Mirialakis, along with the late Dale Mahan — will be inducted prior the Knights’ football home opener Sept. 8 against West Mifflin.
The inductions will formally take place during a 5 p.m. reception in the high school library.
A synopsis of this year’s inductees follow:
Stan CrouchA 1978 Knoch graduate, Crouch was a standout football player and track athlete. He was a tri-captain of the 1977 Knights football team, earning first team all-conference honors and being nominated for the Big 33 game.Crouch set school records in the shot put and discus, breaking his own shot put mark five times and his discus record six times. He went on to play football at Clarion AStatye College and was a member of the Golden Eagles’ 1980 PSAC championship team.
Laurie Zendron TreskyA 1982 Knoch graduate, Tresky excelled in volleyball, basketball and track. She was a member of the Knights’ 1981 section champion volleyball squad and was part of school record-setting 1,600 and 3,200-meter relay teams.Tresky’s 1,600-meter relay tram was the first Knoch girls track team to qualify for the state meet. She attended Gannon University on a volleyball scholarship, served as co-captain in 1984-85 and won the team MVP award.
Rob VoltzA 1991 Knoch graduate, Voltz began his golf career with the Knights in 1985. He won numerous tournaments prior to his freshman year, including the Tri-State PGA Junior Championship. He was a member of Knoch’s undefeated 1990 golf team.Voltz attended Slippery Rock University and lettered in golf all four seasons. He was named a Golf Coaches Association of America All American Scholar and won the PSAC Scholar Athlete Award. Voltz is currently Knoch’s varsity golf coach.
Hope McCorkleA 1994 Knoch graduate, McCorkle competed in basketball, volleyball and track and field. She earned all-state volleyball honors in 1993 and All-WPIAL honors in 1992 and 1993. She also received WPIAL track and field honors as a junior and senior.McCorkle attended Lafayette College, won three Patriot League titles in the shot put and graduated as the school’s record-holder in three events. She played four seasons of volleyball as well, ranks first at Lafayette with 611 career blocks and graduated as the program’s all-time kills leader.
Amy McCall MirialakisA 1995 Knoch graduate, Mirialakis was captain of the girls basketball team her junior and senior seasons and was track team captain her senior year. She won the 1995 WPIAL 100-meter hurdle championship.Mirialakis earned academic and athlletic scholarships to compete in volleyball and track at West Virginia Wesleyan. She set school records in the long jump, high jump and heptathlon and her volleyball team reached the NCAA Division II Elite 8 in 1995. Mirialakis was Wesleyan’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1998.
Dale MahanBefore his death in 2009, Mahan was a teacher at Knoch High School for 37 years and coached basketball and track. He led the Knights to consecutive District 9 basketball titles in 1962 and 1963. His 1962 team still holds the school record for most points scored in a season.Mahan’s track teams won 33 consecutive dual meets and three WPIAL section titles. He never had a losing season in his career as a coach at Knoch.
