Freeport 4th in WPIAL

Dougherty shoots 77; Mars boys soccer wins section

Audrey Dougherty shot a 77 to help the Freeport golf team to a fourth-place finish at the WPIAL Team Finals at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course Thursday afternoon.

Freeport shot a 428 as a team. Sewickley Academy won the WPIAL title with a 404.

Brendan Aber also shot an 80 for the Yellowjackets.

Boys SoccerMario Borino scored three goals as Freeport routed Highlands 8-0 and clinched a spot in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.Kevin Lynch, Seth Davis, Bryce Hanby, Mitch Kendall and Rob Reichenbaugh also found the net for the Yellowjackets (9-7, 7-5).Mars 7, Knoch 2 — The Planets remained unbeaten and clinched the Section 2-AA title.Andrew Diefenbacher and Cory Ferguson each scored two goals for Mars (15-0-1, 12-0).D.J. Carter, Cole Ferguson and Andrew Dominjanni also scored for the Planets.Val Panger and Mark Piora found the net for Knoch (7-6-2, 6-5-1), which was eliminated from playoff contention.Seneca Valley 3, Butler 0 — The Raiders (11-1-1, 10-1-1) won their fifth in a rowand recorded their fourth consecutive shutout.The Golden Tornado (8-8, 4-8) have dropped two straight games by the identical 3-0 score.Slippery Rock 2, Franklin 0 — Ryan Purvis scored both goals for the Rockets (9-5, 6-2).

VolleyballZoe Pawlak had 18 kills as Freeport clinched the section title for the 10th consecutive season with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-15 win over Deer Lakes.Maggie Ward added 23 service points, five aces and 31 assists for the Yellowjackets (13-1, 10-0).Morgan Ruppersberger and Katie Zangaro each had seven kills, Abree Cowan had 13 points and five aces and Hannah Mason 14 points.A-C Valley 3, North Clarion 0 — A-C Valley clinched the KSAC championship with a dominating 25-9, 25-15, 25-14 win over North Clarion.Katie Stumpner led the way with 15 points, three aces, 18 digs and seven kills for the Falcons (12-0).Alyssa Babcock had 11 assists and eight digs, Halee Wetzel seven kills and six digs, Morgan Cratty 10 points, six digs and six kills and Kiersten Rothen 13 digs and 20 assists.Knoch 3, Avonworth 1 — Sarah Armahizer had 19 kills as the Knights outlasted Avonworth 25-21, 23-25, 29-27, 25-20.Bethany Nulph had nine kills and Alley Kerkan had 15 service points and 17 digs for Knoch (12-2).Clarion 3, Karns City 0 — Alyssa Stitt had 14 service points in the Gremlins' 25-12, 25-13, 25-20 loss.Emily Hegedus had seven kills and Brody Whited six kills from the Gremlins.
