Man charged with DUI in mini bike, Jeep crash
CLINTON TWP — A man was nearly three times over the legal limit for alcohol when the child’s mini bike he was driving collided with a Jeep last month, state police said.
The suspect, Edward D. Vantine, 23, of Clinton Township, allegedly acknowledged what he had to drink — 10 or 11 beers and five shots of whiskey.
Police on Monday charged Vantine with drunken driving in connection with the April 30 wreck in Clinton Township that left him hospitalized with injuries.
Police said Vantine had just left the area of his home and was traveling on Cherry Valley Road about 5:30 p.m. on a 2-horsepower mini bike. He ran a stop sign at Saxonburg Boulevard.
He also ran into the path of a Jeep, whose driver told authorities there was no way he could have stopped in time. He said he was traveling the speed limit, which is 45 mph.
Vantine, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown 10 to 15 feet off his bike.
He had the stench of alcohol on him when police and emergency crews got there, said Trooper Jason Frances.
A Saxonburg Ambulance crew member tended to Vantine, who suffered a broken left leg between his hip and knee. Frances said Vantine also may have fractured his right leg and some ribs.
He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment and a blood draw.
Toxicology reports subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.223 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
In addition to driving under the influence, police charged Vantine with driving with a suspended license, driving without a license, driving without insurance, failing to stop at a stop sign, and disobeying a traffic control device.
Additionally, he is charged with illegally driving the mini bike on a road, driving the bike in an unsafe manner, and careless driving.
