Student films hit big screen

Showings set at Seneca High

JACKSON TWP — Fifteen students at Seneca Valley High School are putting their filmmaking skills to the test, and they're inviting the public to view the results.

Those students will screen their short documentary films at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the high school auditorium.

Dan McKosky, a teacher at the high school who specializes in video production and editing, said the screenings are the culmination of months of work.

Each student in September was told to pick a subject for a documentary, and after it was approved, set out to conduct interviews.

The class has spent the past six weeks editing film and crafting the documentaries. Each film is 10 to 20 minutes long, McKosky said.

The screenings won't be new for McKosky because he's already seen the finished products. But that doesn't mean he'll be any less proud when the documentaries are shown publicly for the first time.

“All of them are so very different, which is my favorite thing,” he said. “There are no two that are even remotely the same.”

On Wednesday five students will showcase their work.

The first film, by student Kyle Jennings, will focus on owning a restaurant in Pittsburgh. Another film by Patrick King will show what it's like to start a clothing company.

Among other films, Zach Faller decided to produce a documentary about Brazilian Jiujitsu while Dillan Hodak focused on urban snowboarding.

Both of those films will be screened Thursday evening.

Noah Kastroll, a student whose film will premiere Friday night, focuses on the history of Seneca Valley's marching band, while Ethan Liesie will focus on interviews surrounding World War II and his grandfather who served in it.

The last show of the event, put on by students Anthony Peduzzi and Zach Stoner on Friday evening, will focus on the history and inner-workings of the Seneca Valley student-run television station.

This is the second year that student documentaries have been made at Seneca Valley.
