Gremlins, DuBois playing for keeps
KARNS CITY — The last time Karns City and DuBois Area met on the football field, the Gremlins rung up 69 points.
That was in a 69-28 victory in 2015.
When the teams meet up again at 7 p.m. Friday at Diehl Stadium, the stakes will be a little higher.
“When we last played, it was the final game of the season, a non-conference game,” KC coach Joe Sherwin said. “Now DuBois is in our league. This game takes on a whole new meaning.”
Karns City is coming off a 31-8 win at Moniteau, receiving points from its offense, defense and special teams.
“It's always great to see that,” Sherwin said.
DuBois dropped a 28-14 decision to Brookville, allowing 383 yards passing to Jack Krug. Beavers quarterback Cam-Ron Hays threw for 183 yards in his own right.
“Their quarterback is the one who makes them go,” Sherwin said. “Besides him, their receivers, running back, they're all solid players.”
Karns City played two quarterbacks — Eric Booher and Brayden Christie — last week and Sherwin plans on playing both of them again Friday.
Kaden Scherer and Micah Rupp give the Gremlins two speedy receiving threats. Tight end Nathan Waltman is a big target as well.
The Gremlins passed for 167 yards and rushed for 129 against Moniteau.
“Both of our quarterbacks made plays, both were productive, so both will play,” Sherwin said.
The coach also lauded the play of Zach Blair (who had an interception), linebacker Waltman and lineman Cole Hilliard defensively.
“We've got the potential to have a great defense,” Sherwin said.
This will be the third game in the series between the teams. While KC had the lopsided win in 2015, DuBois scored a 35-31 win over the Gremlins in 2014.
