Schandelmeier sets D-9 javelin mark

Schandelmeier

BROOKVILLE — Matt Schandelmeier entered the day thinking he had no shot at the District 9 Class AA meet javelin record.

Little did he know that he would demolish the old standard by the end of the event.

The Moniteau senior's best throw in Saturday's District 9 Class AA Boys Track and Field Championships was 193 feet, six inches.

That distance was more than 11 feet longer than the previous mark — 181-11 by Johnsonburg's Josh Feronti in 2004.

"At the beginning of the day, I heard people saying that the record was somewhere in the 190s, and I figured I had no shot at it," said Schandelmeier. "Then someone told me it was actually (181-11) and I said, 'I'm all over that.'"

The first-place finish in the javelin, followed by Schandelmeier's successful defense of his district shot put title from 2005 with a throw of 51-10½, means he will go to the state championships Friday as a double-winner.

"I'd say my best event right now is the javelin," he said. "But I'm hoping to place in both events."

Likewise, Karns City's Mark Ferguson now has two district crowns after claiming the 110 hurdles (15.07 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (40.76). They are the first two individual titles of the senior's career.

"There was a pretty good tailwind going today and that helped me out in the 110 hurdles," said Ferguson, who will be making his third appearance at the state meet. "I'd like to medal at states, that's a realistic goal."

Moniteau's 4x400 relay team turned in a dominating performance in the day's final event.

Senior Zack Thompson opened the race by gaining a healthy lead on Elk County Catholic, the one team seeded higher than the Warriors entering the event.

As the baton was passed to Aaron Smith, Andy Weichey and then the team's anchor, David Rumbaugh, each stayed in front of the Crusaders before crossing the finish line in first place at 3:33.09.

"That's not even our best time," said Moniteau coach Mark Kosick. "We ran a 3:31.9 at the Mars Invite.

"But there was a strong wind on the back stretch today," he added. "And Elk County ran a (3:29.55) earlier this season and we beat them today. That's what I look at."

Second-place finishes also guaranteed a trip to the state meet, and there were no shortage of them from local athletes.

Union senior Mike Brothers entered the long jump seeded 13th. His best jump this season was 19-4.

But a bowl of cereal and the right attitude helped him gain over a foot and a half.

Brothers finished the event with a second-place effort of 21-1½.

"My personal best before today was 19-8," said Brothers. "But I got up today and all that was on my mind was the long jump. And I ate a bowl of Wheaties.

"I just focused on running as fast as I could," he added. "I usually don't run as fast as I did today."

Moniteau senior Ryan Protzman had a strong close to his District 9 career, finishing second in both the discus (149-4) and the shot put (51-6½). Both marks were personal records and Protzman will be making his first appearance at the state meet.

Other local athletes headed to the PIAA event via second-place finishes include:

n Karns City senior Steve Black in the pole vault (13-3).

• Karns City junior Tim Berteotti in the 110 high hurdles (15.54).

• The Gremlins' 4x100 relay squad of Aaron Ganter, Josiah Grubbs, Ferguson and Black (45.39).

• Union senior Toby Best in the javelin (177-4).

• Moniteau senior Zack Thompson in the 300 hurdles (41.67).

• Moniteau junior Aaron Smith in the 800 run (2:01.83).
