The weather may have been nasty, but it didn't stop four local girls from heading to the PIAA Track and Field Finals as district champions.

Slippery Rock's Elissa McCune (300 hurdles), Angie Shaffer (high jump) and Grove City's Kristy Woods (shot put and discus) and Hana Casalnova (400 dash) all placed first at the District 10 Class AA girls' meet, Saturday at Hickory High School.

Not many personal best times, distances and heights were managed at the meet, with McCune winning her event in 47.39 seconds.

"She was in the mid-46s last year," Rockets' coach Mike Kish said of McCune. "But she is a much better hurdler this year. It's just that the conditions weren't great."

This will be the junior's third trip to the state meet, which starts Friday at Shippensburg University.

"It was cold and rainy," McCune said of Saturday's weather. "There were spurts of rain. It would rain, and then the sun would come out, and then it would start to rain again.

"The weather did make me nervous," she added. "The rain made the track look slippery."

Shaffer's height of five feet, two inches in the high jump was a personal best.

She also qualified for states in the 100 hurdles by placing second with a time of 16.48.

Shaffer went to Shippensburg last season in the high jump and is hoping to do well in both events this time around.

"In the high jump, I'm just hoping I can jump 5-2 again," she said. "And the hurdles, I'd like to get 15 (seconds) if at all possible."

Woods won the discus with a throw of 132-4 and the shot put with a 44-5.

The Grove City senior is the defending state champion in the discus.

"Going into last year, she thought that her best event was the shot put," said Eagles' coach Mickey Hardenburg. "And then she goes out and wins a state title in the discus. I'd say she's equally strong in both."

Hardenburg is glad he will have Casalnova around for two more years.

The sophomore, who made the state meet as a freshman, won the 400 event with a time of 58.99.

Her second-place time in the 800 run of 2:19.48 was just one-hundredth of a second behind Union City's Hannah Day.

"She's done a fantastic job," said Hardenburg. "She went to states last year and has learned a lot about how to run her race."

Also making the PIAA event was Slippery Rock senior Melanie Prelec, who placed second in the javelin at 121-4.

Woods and Casalnova could not be reached for comment.
