Butler's Logan Renwick won the 110 hurdles in 14.8 seconds Thursday as the Tornado boys beat Shaler 104-46.

Tornado coaches hold back Renwick in Shaler meet

BUTLER TWP - It seems the only thing that can hold Logan Renwick back is the Butler track and field coaching staff but with good reason.

Renwick had won four individual events in the Tornado's meets against Pine-Richland, Fox Chapel and North Hills, but the junior had to settle for only three wins Thursday against Shaler.

Renwick won the 110 hurdles (14.8 seconds), the long jump (21 feet, 7C\v inches) and the triple jump (44-6) as the Tornado breezed to a 104-46 victory over the Titans.

"Logan easily won three and he could've won four, but we wanted to save him for Saturday (at the Tri-State Invitational)," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz.

The invitational will be Butler's third event since Tuesday, but the Tornado won't have another dual meet until April 14 at Seneca Valley.

Not to be outdone, Butler freshman Alexis Frost won the 100 hurdles (15.34) the long jump (16-2Z\v) and the triple jump (35-6), but the Butler girls team dropped an 87-63 decision to the Titans.

The Butler boys (4-0) won six of the seven field events and had 10 different individual winners en route to the victory.

"We had a lot of young kids with a lot of (personal records), which is what we want," said Schontz. "The scores will take care of themselves.

"The one thing we try to do is have everyone go out and compete hard, like Ben (Porter) and Evan Gomez battling each other (in the 1,600, an event in which both recorded times of 4:50.0)."

Frost's performance was overshadowed by the Titans' run on the track after Butler captured the first two events.

"Lexie's in ninth grade and that 15.3 is unbelievable," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris. "The school record is like 15.1."

Trisha Brandt, Danica Snyder, Emily Petrak and Katresa Savisky won the opening 3,200 relay with a time of 9:55.8, then Frost won the 100 hurdles, and Jill Mudrick and Becky Nowacki placed second and third to sweep the event.

Shaler won eight of the final nine track events, the lone Tornado win coming from Petrak in the 400 (1:02.3).

"Emily Petrak stepped up for the team," said Harris. "That 400 was tough. She went after it.

"But, once we got to the 800, that's when we got burned. Shaler went 1-2 and that hurt us," Harris added.

The Titans girls have defeated Butler two years in a row and Harris has seen the improvement coming.

"Butler against Shaler has become a fantastic rivalry," said Harris. "(Shaler coach) Dave Interthal is doing a wonderful job. He's taken a Shaler team that has been mediocre in the past and built it up."

Just as in the boys meet, the Butler girls (3-1) won six of the seven field events. Aside from Frost's two wins in the jumps, freshman Paige Rittelman won the high jump, while Bri Lumley won the shot put, Monteleone took the discus and Marina Gracik won the javelin.

"Overall, the girls stepped up," said Harris, who has a combined 83 freshmen and sophomores on his squad. "I don't look at who's older or younger, what grade you're in, whether you're 14 or 18. When you go on the track or runway or circle, go out and shine.

"Don't worry about thinking someone's a senior and they should finish ahead of you. Let your athletic ability take over."
