Rocket girls win Center Invite

Elissa McCune won the 200-meter dash and the 300 hurdles and Breanna Northcott won the discus and javelin as the Slippery Rock girls track and field team captured the Center Invitational Saturday.

McCune recorded times of 27.2 in the 200 and 49.2 in the 300 hurdles while Northcott had a 103-1 in the discus and 105-4 in the javelin. She also placed third in the shot put and was named the Field MVP.

Slippery Rock outdistanced the 15-team field as Blackhawk placed second (81) and Titusville (57) was third.

Angie Shaffer won the high jump (5-0 and Haley Sefton the pole vault (8-6) while Samantha Amyx was second at 8-0.

"We were very excited," said Slippery Rock coach Mike Kish, "especially. when you think you're going to perform, but it was a cold day. It was not as good as we'd like, but we turned in a lot of good times.

"Brea adds a dimension we haven't had, when you're picking up points in the throws. Running, we've had a senior group for four years, that's expected.

"We knew we'd be strong. Even this year, our girls distance with Casey Dudek and Jessica Bennett and Cassie (Rasely), that adds another dimension," Kish added.

In the boys meet, the Rockets placed fourth out of 18 teams (60 points) behind champion Riverside (91), Center (85), Quaker Valley (77).

Ethan Geisler won the 300 hurdles (41.6), Derrick Orlsoki the javelin (149-2) and Davis Caldwell the pole vault (12-6) to lead Slippery Rock.
