KARNS CITY - It's over.

After 87 consecutive Keystone Athletic Shortway Conference victories, the Karns City boys track team saw its streak come to an end in a 77-73 decision to Moniteau Wednesday.

Tony Miller's win in the 3,200-meter run secured the victory for the Warriors (6-0) and thwarted a late Gremlins rally.

Karns City (6-1) hadn't lost a KSAC meet since April 2001, when it fell to eventual PIAA Class AA champion Clarion.

"It's satisfying after the kids have worked so hard," said Moniteau coach Mark Kosick.

The meet was a seesaw battle, but the Warriors, who took first place in all seven field events, used an 8-1 advantage in three consecutive events discus, triple jump and 800 to take a 71-56 lead.

"We knew in the field events we would take a good licking," said Karns City coach Don Black.

Karns City swept the 200, led by Anthony Stimac's fourth win of the day, to make it a 71-65 team score. Karns City needed to prevent Moniteau from securing four total points over the final two events in hopes of winning the meet, but Miller (10 minutes, 50.5 seconds) outlasted Aaron McGarvey (10:51.8) for the win.

Sophomore Alex Edmonds grabbed the third spot for Moniteau.

"I told the (3,200 runners), 'It's on you guys,'" said Kosick. "It's nice to see the distance runners get some of the glory."

"Our distance runners had run a few races, but it can't always come down to them," said Black. "I thought our hurdles didn't do well, but there were countless places we could have picked it up."

The teams have had some epic battles through the years, including a four-year stretch in which the Warriors finished runners-up to Karns City before a two-loss season last year.

Four years ago, Karns City and Moniteau tied 75-all, but two days later, a change in a third-place scoring gave the Gremlins a 76-74 victory.

"The next year, we needed to sweep the javelin to win it all and we were, then a Karns City kid had a throw for second place and we lost," Kosick said.

"It's been close. They've won, but we've been right there. They're the only ones we've lost to in the past five years, other than Redbank Valley slipping one in last year."

The Warriors also received double individual event winning performances from Victor Santoyo (high and triple jumps), Tyler Armagost (shot put and javelin) and Dylan Kristufek (300 hurdles and long jump).

Stimac keyed the Gremlins' push, winning the 100 (11.5), 200 (23.3), 400 (53.1) and as a member of the winning 400 relay with Shane Dillon, J.J. Grenninger and Nick Lopresti. Karns City won all three relays and seven of the 11 track events.

With the loss, Black expects his team to pick themselves up and keep on going.

"I don't think we'll pack our bags and call it quits," said Black. "We'll keep our heads up and try and win again tomorrow."

In the girls meet, the Gremlins won 14 of 18 events en route to a 109½-40½ victory.

Amber Saunders captured all three jumping events the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches, tying her school record), long jump (16-2) and triple jump (32-4) while joining Emily Olszak, Kara Sypulski and Nicole Harmon in the winning 400 relay (54.1).

Stephanie Stoughton won the discus (99-0) and javelin (96-3) while Olszak also won the 100 (13.4) and 200 (28.4). Nicole Harmon won the 1,600 (6:14.8) and was part of the winning 3,200 relay with Hannah Beck, Ashley Campbell and Kaycee Grimm.

Taylor Shaffer led the Warriors with a win in the 400 (1:05.2) and as a member of the winning 1,600 relay.
