April 6 — Clair D. Gustafson Jr., 30, and Nora A. Barker, 58, both of Butler were charged with having narcotics and other contraband stemming from a January traffic stop on the 300 block of Center Avenue. Police said they were passengers in a vehicle that was pulled over shortly after 5 p.m. Jan. 30.

Barker was arrested after officers learned she was wanted on a warrant, according to court documents. She admitted she had crack cocaine in her bra and turned over the suspected drug to police. She also allegedly had a suspected heroin and a snorting straw in one of her pants pockets, police said.

Gustafson told officers that he had a syringe in his pocket. Police removed the syringe as well as a stamp bags of suspected heroin.

Both suspects are charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

1:30 a.m. April 5 — Tyler S. Atkinson, 20, allegedly assaulted his roommate during an altercation at their duplex on the 200 block of West Penn Street. Officers were called to the home and found the victim pressing a bag of ice to the side of his face.

Police described the man’s injuries as purplish bruising underneath both eyes, a “slightly crooked” and swollen nose and small cuts to his face and lower lip. He told police that he and Atkinson got into an argument during which the defendant hit him numerous times in the face, court documents said.

Police later spoke to Atkinson, who allegedly corroborated the victim’s account. He claimed to have struck his roommate “only like five times,” documents said. He also claimed that his roommate tried to hit him first, but he ducked the punch.

Atkinson is charged with simple assault.

1:16 a.m. April 5 — Police said Maxine J. Jacobson, 23, of Center Township was found with drug contraband following a traffic stop on the 400 block of West New Castle Street. A subsequent search of her purse allegedly turned up an empty stamp bag believed to have contained drugs.

Police later searched her car and found a crack pipe. Jacobson is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license and failing to use turn signals.

10:59 p.m. Friday — Jaron McKissick, 39, of Mars was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after a traffic stop at North Garfield Avenue and Pittsburgh Street in Mars.

April 30 — Goldie M. Deal, 58, of Center Township was charred with drugged driving stemming from a February traffic stop in Butler. Police said they stopped her about 12:15 a.m. Feb. 21 on the 400 block of West Penn Street.

Deal eventually was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test that showed she had several drugs in her system, according to court documents, including cocaine, amphetamine, clonazepam, methadone, gabapentin, aripiprazole and fentanyl.

In addition to driving under the influence of drugs, she is charged with failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes and careless driving.

6:45 p.m. March 29 — A man and woman told police they heard gunshots that they believed may have been fired in their direction as they walked the Rails to Trails path in Madison Township.

A short time later, according to a police report, the couple encountered an unknown white male standing next to a red utility terrain vehicle with a black roof. The couple spoke to the male but got no response. No weapon was seen, and no injuries were reported.

Troopers from the Kittanning and Clarion stations arrived to investigate. Police said the investigation continues.

4:16 p.m. March 24 — Justin R. Hile, 31, of Mercer was arrested after he allegedly swiped two energy drinks at the Sheetz store on West Main Street in Pine Township. Hile, who has one prior shoplifting conviction, was arraigned on a misdemeanor count of retail theft. He is free on $10,000 unsecured bond.

10:30 p.m. March 21 — A 17-year-old boy escaped from the George Junior Republic juvenile detention facility in Pine Township. Troopers and Grove City police searched for the teen, but they did not find him.

Wednesday — Police reported they are investigating a case of suspected identity theft that targeted an 80-year-old Slippery Rock woman. An unknown person used the woman’s credit card information between March 11 and 12 to purchase $464 worth of Fitbit products.

2:49 p.m. April 3 — A sport utility vehicle driven by Steven C. Hurd, 61, of Mars struck a deer on Route 208 in Washington Township, Lawrence County. He was not injured but his vehicle had to be towed.

7 p.m. March 16 — An unknown vandal pulled a mailbox out of the ground on Stoughton Road in Scott Township and threw it into the woods. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-598-2211.
