Doubling his pleasure
BALDWIN — Some high school athletes might have been satisfied with one first-place medal, but Butler junior Logan Renwick wasn't about to let somebody beat him at his best event.
After winning the boys 110-meter hurdles earlier in the day, Renwick bested the field in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 8 inches Thursday at the WPIAL Class AAA Track and Field Championships at Baldwin High.
"The triple jump has been my best event the last few years and I take pride in being the best in the WPIAL," said Renwick.
Renwick got the 45-8 on his sixth and final attempt in the event, taking him past Penn Hills' Richie Rouse, whose best effort was 45-1Z\v.
"Logan's goal is to win a state title in the triple jump," said Butler coach John Williams. "And in big meets, my money's on Logan. He's one of the best in the state."
Renwick won the 110 hurdles with a with a time of 15 seconds flat, .13 of a second ahead of Norwin's Cory Stoken.
"I was disappointed the last two years," he said. "I made the finals, but didn't run well after that.
"Today, I was just focused on qualifying for states (in the hurdles), but winning feels great."
Renwick's day also included second-place finishes in the 300 hurdles (40.01) and in the long jump (22-7½).
• It was Seneca Valley senior Cam Stauffer's last WPIAL Championship and he made the most of it.
Stauffer turned in a time of 9:30.56 to win the 3,200 run.
"For the first few laps I just settled in," said Stauffer, a Duquesne University recruit. "With about 1,200 (meters) to go, I moved into third and then took the lead with 500 left."
The finish was a personal best for Stauffer by 10 seconds. He will be running in his second state title meet next weekend at Shippensburg University.
Class AAA GirlsYes, Butler's Paige Rittelmann is a freshman.A freshman with a WPIAL title, that is.Rittelmann's effort of 5-5 in the high jump was a personal best and good enough to top the field, beating two jumpers from Shaler, Chelsea O'Hanlon and Shannon Powell, who both topped out at 5-3."I wanted to win today, but I never thought it would actually happen," said Rittelmann, whose previous best was a 5-4. "Before we began jumping, I was pretty nervous, but not after we started."I'm hoping to go 5-5 again at states," she said.Several athletes managed runner-up performances, including:• The Butler boys 3,200 relay squad of Ben Porter, Nate Neff, Matt Pribis and Lance Dugger with a time of 7:58.29.• Seneca Valley's Erin Lopresti in the girls 800 run at 2:16.61.• Butler's Briana Lumley, who threw 40-Z\v in the girls shot put.
