SHIPPENSBURG — On a sweltering day at the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday, Butler junior Logan Renwick was just as hot.

Unfortunately for Renwick, so was the rest of the competitors in the Class AAA triple jump.

Renwick broke the school record with an effort of 48 feet, 1 inch, but it was good enough for only fourth place.

Tyrell Ellison of Muhleberg won the event with a jump of 49-C\v.

"He broke our school record by eight inches and finished one place lower than last year," said Butler coach Rick Schontz. "What can you do?"

Renwick also broke his own school record in the 300 hurdles in the preliminaries Friday with a time of 38.88 seconds.

The time was the fifth fastest in the event Friday.

"He had a very good day," Schontz said. "He guaranteed himself a medal in the hurdles and we have high hopes for him in the long jump (Saturday)."

Renwick could come home with three medals.

"It would be nice," Schontz said.

His teammates, Briana Lumley, won a medal of her own in the Class AAA shot put with a throw of 39 feet.

Shante Evans of West Chester Henderson won the event with a toss of 43-4.

The heat may have torpedoed the state title chances of two area high jumpers.

Slippery Rock senior Angie Shaffer, who won the District 10 high jump last weekend with a 5-7 effort, cleared just 5-2 to finish tied for seventh.

Karns City senior Amber Saunders placed fifth at 5-4.

Both said the heat was a major factor in their performances.

The competition began at 12:30 in the afternoon in the heat of the day.

"The sun was just beating down on you out there," Saunders said.

Both Saunders and Shaffer qualified for the event last year, but failed to place.

Shaffer, though, was disappointed with her effort.

"It was just really, really hot," Shaffer said. "It wasn't my greatest performance, but I got a medal."

Both made it their priority this season to get back to the state meet in the event and win a medal.

Both accomplished their goal.

"I think I did an OK job," Saunders said. "I would have liked to have jumped higher. But I was pretty excited when I got on that podium and got my medal."

Shaffer had a good day in the 100-meter hurdles, winning her heat to advance to Saturday.

But disappointment about her high jump performance lingered into Friday evening.

"I'm still a little upset," Shaffer said. "I ran a pretty good race (in the hurdles). I felt really fast and, hopefully, that will carry over into (Saturday).

It was a rough afternoon for local runners, too.

In addition to Renwick and Shaffer in their hurdle events, only three other Butler County area track athletes advanced to Saturday.

Nick Gentile of Freeport qualified in the Class AA 800-meter run, Erin Lopresti of Seneca Valley in the Class AAA 800 and Hana Casalnova of Grove City in the Class AA 800.
