Area youth win awards at Pa. junior dairy show
Twelve Butler County 4-H members participated in the 2010 Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show held recently at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. 4-H and FFA members from across the state competed in six dairy breed divisions at the 55th annual show.
Area youth placing at the show were:
• In the Brown Swiss division, R.J. Fisher of Portersville was awarded first place and Best Udder in Class for his Dry Cow 2 years of age and over.
• Jacob Kennedy of Valencia placed first with his Fall Calf.
• In the Junior 2 year old class, Troy Booher of New Castle was recognized as a Master Showman with his second place entry.
• Taylor Kennedy of Valencia exhibited the fourth place entry in the Winter Calf class.
• In the Fall Yearling class, Courtney Callen of Saxonburg placed fifth with her entry.
• Travis Covert of Chicora earned awards for Master Showman, Best Animal Owned and Bred, and Junior Champion with his first place Fall Yearling entry in the Guernsey Division. Travis' entry in the Four Year Old class finished second and earned him a second Master Showman award and another Best Owned and Bred animal.
• Cody Stephenson of Chicora placed first in the Junior 2 year old class and also earned awards for Master Showman and Best Animal Owned and Bred.
• In the Summer Yearling class, Trisha Covert of Chicora placed sixth.
• In the Holstein division, Robin Peters of Connoquenessing placed first and earned a Master Showman award and a Best Owned and Bred animal with her Senior 2 Year Old entry. Robin also placed first with her Summer Yearling and earned a Master Showman award with her fifth place Fall Calf.
• Jake Booher of New Castle exhibited the fourth place entry in the Dry Cow 2 years and older Jersey class.
• Anna Flick of Fenelton placed sixth with her Winter Yearling Jersey entry.
• In the Red and White division, Lane Kummer of Evans City placed fourth and earned a Master Showman with her entry in the Fall Calf class.
The Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show represents the highest level of competition in the Pennsylvania 4-H dairy program. Exhibitors at the state level qualify for competition at district level shows held during the summer months. At the district level, entries are judged on individual merit with all blue merit animals qualifying for state competition.
