Dig in to Win
JEFFERSON TWP — It was a cold day, a windy day, but a great day for the Knoch track and field team.
With Sam Logan having a hand in winning four events, the Knights girls squad rolled past New Castle 119-27 while in the boys meet, Andy Tuzikow captured the shot and discus in an 89-60 Knights victory.
“Sam's been asked to do a lot of different things,” Knoch girls coach Judy Geist said. “She never complains. She never hesitates. She's a good team leader.”
Logan won the 400 (1:00.42), 200 (26.28), long jump (15-1½) and was a part of the winning 1,600 relay (4:31.97) along with Ashlyn Carlsson, Tess Haverstick and Jessica Wise.
Three of the Red Hurricanes' four wins came in the field events.
“We have a lot of young girls, but a lot have done our seventh- and eighth-grade program,” Geist said. “Our strength is our weakness.
“It doesn't matter if we win or lose, but that we keep improving,” Geist added.
Emilee Hertweck won the 1,600 (5:51) and 3,200 (14:18) while Wise won the high jump (4-4) and Katie Jones the 800 (2:50) and was part of the winning 3,200 along with Carlsson, Haverstick and Hannah Durci.
The Knights (1-0) swept the relays to also bolster their non-section victory.
“We have quality athletes in a lot of events,” Geist said. “That's good for us. I'm sure they're excited, especially with a new coach.”
On the boys side, the Knights (1-0) raced out to a 32-9 lead in the first five track events to grab the early advantage.
The 3,200 relay team of Phil Kletzli, Alex Cetnar, Paul Kasunic and Luke Brewer started things off with a winning time of 8:55 with Cetnar also winning the 1,600 (5:20), followed by Kletzli's win in the 400 (55.12).
James Larrimer also picked up a win in the 110 hurdles to key the early jump.
New Castle won the 400 relay and the 300 hurdles, but the Knights closed out the track portion of the meet with victories in the final four events to solidify their advantage.Tuzikow's throws in the shot (43-10) and discus (139-8), along with Carl Shaw's winning pole vault (11-6), allowed the Knights to offset the Canes' prowess in the jumps.“We kept some guys out of their spots because we have a big section meet against Hampton Thursday,” Knoch boys coach Wess Brahler said. “That will set the tone for the season.“After (Monday's) meet, we're definitely going in the right direction, that's for sure.”BoysKnoch 89, New Castle 60Track Events3,200-meter relay: Knoch (Phil Kletzli, Alex Cetnar, Paul Kasunic, Luke Brewer) 8:55; 110 hurdles: James Larrimer (K) 16.88; 100 dash: Huddleson (NC) 11.06; 1,600 run: Alex Cetnar (K) 5;20; 400 dash: Phil Kletzli (K) 55.12; 400 relay: New Castle 45.52; 300-meter hurdles: Thompson (NC) 46.25; 800-meter run: Luke Brewer (K) 2:14; 200-meter dash: Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin (K) 22.97; 3,200-meter run: Carlsson (K) 11:25; 1,600-meter relay: Knoch (Phil Kletzli, Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin, Alex Campbell, Stefan Carlsson) 4:05Field EventsHigh jump: Rice (NC) 5-7; Long jump: Carter (NC) 21-0; Triple jump: Carter (NC) 21-0; Shot put: Andy Tuzikow (K) 43-10; Discus: Andy Tuzikow (K) 139-8; Javelin: Ware (NC) 127-0; Pole vault: Carl Shaw (K) 11-6GirlsKnoch 119, New Castle 27Track Events3,200-meter relay: Knoch (Ashlyn Carlsson, Tess Haverstick, Hannah Durci, Katie Jones) 11:51; 100 hurdles: Hood (NC) 17.53; 100 dash: Hood (NC) 12.5; 1,600 run: Emilee Hertweck (K) 5:51; 400 dash: Sam Logan (K) 1:00.42; 400 relay: Knoch Nicole Cress, Gabi Lassinger, Mikayla Crouch, Jenna Plutyk) 5;51.84; 300 hurdles: Katie Bozzo (K) 53.78; 800 run: Katie Jones (K) 2:50; 200 dash: Sam Logan 26.28; 3,200 run: Emilee Hertweck (K) 14;18; 1,600 relay: Knoch (Ashlyn Carlsson, Tess Haverstick, Jessica Wise, Sam Logan) 4;31.97Field EventsHigh jump: Jessica Wise (K) 4-4; Long jump: Sam Logan (K) 15-1.5; Triple jump: Hood (NC) 30-10; Shot put: Maranda Tano (K) 33-3; Discus: Rebekah McCorkle (K) 92-2; Javelin: Treller (NC) 79-0; Pole vault: Fielder (NC) 8-0
