Hegedus wins triple jump at P-R Invitational

PINE TWP — Annie Hegedus could barely practice Thursday because of a pulled gluteus muscle.

Still, Hegedus, a sophomore on the Karns City girls track and field team, decided to gut it out at the Pine-Richland Invitational Friday.

On her first leap of the day in the triple jump, she jammed her leg when she landed.

At that point, Hegedus had some serious doubts about how she would fare.

“I didn’t even think I’d place,” Hegedus said.

Not only did Hegedus place, leaping 33 feet, 1¼ inches on her final jump, she finished first.

No one was more surprised by that than Hegedus.

“It wasn’t my best jump at all,” Hegedus said. “I’m falling apart.”

Hegedus was one of only two local winners at Pine-Richland. The Knoch girls 1,600-meter relay team of Katie Bozzo, Ashlyn Carlsson, Emily Robb and Jessica Wise also placed first with a time of 4 minutes, 17.31 seconds.

The Knoch girls finished eighth out of the 30 teams at the invite. Mount Lebanon ran away with the meet with 111 points — 54½ points better than second place Elizabeth Forward.

Carlsson had a big day for the Knights. In addition to running a leg of the winning 1,600 relay, she also ran anchor on the Knights’ fourth-place 3,200-meter relay finish. Carlsson also placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:25.18.

For Hegedus, though, winning the triple jump was a good first step in what will be a hectic month of May.

Hegedus also plays AAU basketball during the spring, as well as attending personal workouts two days a week.

She isn’t worried all of those activities will affect her jumps as the District 9 meet looms.

“I can’t stop doing either of them,” Hegedus said.

Hegedus is also trying to adjust to a new takeoff spot in the triple jump.

She has moved back four feet from her usual spot. It’s been a difficult adjustment.

“Mentally, it freaks me out,” she said.

The Knoch boys also fared well, finishing seventh.

Riverside and Canon-McMillan tied with 71 points. New Castle was right behind with 70 points.

Knoch’s highest placer was Stefan Carlsson, who finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.85.

Junior Colin McTighe and his brother, freshman Brennan McTighe, both placed in the discus. Colin was fourth with a toss of 132 feet while Brennan was sixth at 124-4.

Brennan also placed fourth in the shot put with an effort of 46-11½.

“Coming into this year, my main goal was to letter,” Brennan said. “Once everything started clicking and I qualified for WPIALs, my goals changed. Now I’d like to go farther and farther and get to the WPIAL finals and maybe even states.”

Colin said his younger brother has the potential to do great things.

“He’s going to break some records,” Colin said.
