Moroney flies to title
BROOKVILLE — From stepping stone to milestone — that has been the evolution of Logan Moroney's junior season on the track.
Karns City's star already had the Gremlins' record in both the boys 100 and 200-meter dashes when he showed up at the District 9 Class AA Championships Friday at Brookville High School.
He proceeded to add his first individual district title to his resume, winning the 200 with a time of 22.7 seconds, .09 seconds ahead of Clarion's Ian Corbett.
“I took the lead with about five feet left,” said Moroney. “It's the same way the 200 ended at the Redbank Valley Invitational last week. I edged (Corbett) at the end there too.”
Karns City coach Don Black has seen Moroney's improvement first-hand.
“He came on at the end of last year, but has put a lot of time in the weight room and is a lot stronger this season,” he said. “At (6-foot-4, 210 pounds), he looks like a freight train coming down the track.”
The training has made a big difference, according to Moroney.
“It's been a great season,” he said. “I never thought I'd get both school records this year, but our conditioning at the beginning of the season was a lot more difficult than it was last year. I'm seeing the results of that now.”
Moroney also was a member of the Gremlins' 4x100 relay team that earned district gold with a time of 44.87.
The foursome included Tyler Kepple, Zach Moore and Nathan Weckerly.
Moroney, Kepple and Weckerly were members of last year's relay squad that finished first in the district.
“We wouldn't have been satisfied with anything less than first place,” said Weckerly, the team's anchor. “Hopefully, we can get to the second day at states and medal.”
“We set the school record (44.01) at the Redbank Invite,” said Kepple. “If it was warmer than it was today, we could have gone faster than we did.”
Moroney will also compete in the 100 at states after placing second to Corbett with a time of 11.24.
KC's 4x400 relay team of Wyatt Everetts, Dakota Mohney, Chandler Turner and Collin Dunmyre finished second to advance to the state meet, set for Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
Moniteau junior Brendon Stamm was all smiles after earning second place and a state berth in the discus with a distance of 131 feet, 6 inches.
“I wanted to throw my best (139-7.5) and I didn't do that,” said Stamm, who also placed fifth in the shot put. “But I'm looking forward to competing against everybody at states.”
Girls
Maura Kimmel used a career-best throw of 34-6.25 in the shot put to place runner-up to Kane's Morgan Nicholson and extend her season.
The sophomore from Moniteau added a fourth-place effort in the discus.
“The cold did get to me today,” she admitted. “I'm surprised I did this well (in the shot put). I'm happy with how it turned out. I want to do well at states, but I think it will be a good experience for me no matter what.”
Karns City's 4x100 team of Brittany Coyle, Alyssa Gibson, Annie Hegedus and Breann Wood is moving on after placing second with a time of 51.41.
The Gremlins will also send junior Cheyenne Troutman to states thanks to her second-place effort in the long jump (15-6).
