Rockburn single lifts SR baseball, 8-7

Jason Rockburn helped the Slippery Rock High School baseball team clinch the Region 6-AAA title in exciting fashion Wednesday at home.

He hit a single with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Travis Lauster to help the Rockets escape with an 8-7 win over Meadville.

Slippery Rock trailed 7-5 after the Bulldogs plated four runs in the top of the seventh.

Her outing included six strikeouts and just one walk.

Kristina DeMatteis homered for the Warriors (13-1) and Sara Hull singled twice and scored twice.

Slippery Rock 8, Corry 7 (eight innings) — Hannah Wilson reached on an error when the Beavers threw the ball wide of first base and down the right-field line, allowing the freshman to come all the way around to score the deciding run in the top of the eighth inning.

The game began on Tuesday, but was suspended after the second inning due to rain.

The Rockets improved to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in region games.

Mars missed out on a trip to the state playoffs, losing to Mount Lebanon 4-1 in the WPIAL Class AAA team consolation match at Bethel Park High School.

Track and Field

Josh Jones won the 1,600 and 800 and Andrew Maxwell won the 3,200 run in 9:59 to lead Slippery Rock to an 89-61 win over Hickory.

The Rockets girls suffered their first loss of the season in a 92-57 setback to the Hornets.
