Iron Bucks stay red hot with 6-5 win over BlueSox

Have won 13 of 14 heading into final stretch of season

After a poor start to the season, the Butler Iron Bucks caught fire.

That trend continued at Pullman Park Friday night.

Paul Perman's infield single scored Colin Harger, breaking a 5-all tie in the top of the ninth inning as the Bucks won for the 13th time in 14 games with a 6-5 win over the Butler BlueSox.

It was the last game for both teams at the venue this summer.

“It's different, being the home team but not being treated like it,” said Bucks' outfielder and Butler High graduate Dallas Hays, who doubled and scored in the victory. “We had to battle with the fans a bit this season, but we just really came together and have gotten to be like a family.”

The team's latest victory improves it to 14-11 and came after it blew a three-run lead and then trailed 5-4 entering the eighth frame.

Jake McCaskey, who earlier belted a two-run home run, hit an inside-the-park home run, the first run against Sox's reliever Jackson Rogers, to tie the game at 5-5.

Kyle Lysy was rewarded for battling through eight innings to pick up the win after striking out 10 and walking six. He was shaky to start, allowing two runs in each of the first two innings, but did not allow a hit in his final six innings on the mound.

Greg Geis closed the game by retiring the Sox in order in the ninth frame.

“I was fired up, but I wanted to be smart,” Lysy, who pitches for Shippensburg University, said of not going for the complete game. “I had a lot of adrenalin, was able to keep the ball down and got quick outs.”

Lysy's most tense moments after the first two innings came in the bottom of the fifth when he hit Josh Johnson with a pitch, then walked Ryan Lynn and Brandon Wetherholt to load the bases with two outs. He induced a groundout to get out of the jam.

“Kyle is an ace, no doubt about it,” said Bucks' manager Matt Morrone. “He has a chance to pitch at the next level.”

The Sox (12-11) stranded nine runners in the game.

“That's been a big part of our losses this year,” said Sox manager Dan Helgert. “We've struggled when it comes to situational hitting.”

But in the very next inning, a walk and two errors — all with two outs — allowed Matt Schitroma to score the go-ahead run for the BlueSox.

The Bucks opened the game with a flurry, scoring three runs in the top of the first, including McCaskey's first home run of the game, this one clearing the wall in left field.

The damage came against Sox's starting pitcher Travis Mowery, who settled down and pitched into the sixth inning.

“When Travis just tries to be himself, he does well,” said Helgert. “But when he overthrows, he's all over the place and that's what happened in the first inning.”

All four of the Sox's hits came in the first two innings. Lynn and Alex Altmire both tallied RBI-singles in that span as the Bucks' 3-0 lead turned into a 4-3 deficit.

Noah Ross singled in a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
