Resident 'beyond deserving' of volunteer work recognition

Zelienople Historical Society event organizer Adel Fatur, also known as the “Flag Lady,” was named Zelienople's 2020 Volunteer of the Year for her tireless efforts giving back to the community, including work delivering meals to shut-ins and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The “Flag Lady.” A meal deliverer during the pandemic. Adel Fatur is known as many things.

Now, she has another moniker: Zelienople's 2020 Volunteer of the Year.

Zelienople Borough Council awarded the annual award to Fatur for the myriad ways in which she supports the community and gives back to the town. In a press release, the borough called Fatur “beyond deserving” of the designation.

The borough cited Fatur's volunteering with the Red Hats Society, for which she decorates and organizes parade floats, as well as her selling quilt raffle tickets during Open Air Markets, a weekly Thursday event in Zelienople.

She also delivered meals to shut-ins and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic from English Lutheran Church.

But of the manifold reasons the borough bestowed the award on Fatur, much of it has to do with her work with the Zelienople Historical Society.

There, Fatur serves as chairwoman of “Ways and Means,” where she created and organized the annual “Sunday Sundae Ice Cream Social” fundraiser and the Scavenger Marble Hunt. Fatur also helped with the “Old Coots Giving Bad Advice” group as well as the June Garden Fair and Hunt for History fundraisers.

She also serves as the historical society's Miracle on Main organizer.

Most recently, Fatur created the Annual Porch Parade, where residents and business owners decorated their buildings' facades and yards with patriotic colors and decorations, having recruited advertisers, porch participants and judges.

She also exceeded her flag goal when she sold and placed flags at the Four Corners Park in July, which was an attempt to get Zelienople into the Guinness Book of World Records for most flags in a town.

“The fact that Adel was nominated by three different entities bears out that she has certainly spent her efforts of giving all over our town,” the borough stated.
