Robert Benson is the new managing editor of the Butler Eagle.

Benson, who started Monday, is the former editor of the Danville Register & Bee in Danville, Va.

He said readers should expect even more local coverage of Butler County.

“We’re going to double down on local news,” Benson said. “We have a strong news staff at the Butler Eagle. We will continue the work started by the Wise family to produce a top-notch family newspaper.”

After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Benson began his journalism career in 1986 as a police and court reporter for The Bee, an afternoon newspaper, and later the Danville Register & Bee, a morning newspaper.

Benson subsequently covered local government, wrote a local slice-of-life column for the Register & Bee in the 1990s.

He later was the opinion page editor before becoming editor in 2009.

Benson said he was attracted to Butler County. He said the county has rolling terrain similar to Danville.

“I have to say it’s a unique part of the country,” Benson said. “I’ve never lived in Pennsylvania. It’s beautiful. This is just a lovely part of the state.”

His family is relocating to the Connoquenessing area within two weeks.

He and his wife, Jeannie, have two children, Sandy, a high school sophomore, and Kyle, a seventh-grader. They will attend classes in the Butler School District.
