Man accused of shoplifting
BUTLER TWP — A Butler man is accused of shoplifting — for the 13th time.
Township police Tuesday charged 50-year-old Terry Williams with stealing a 7-inch computer tablet from the Verizon Wireless store at the Bon Aire Plaza.
He later allegedly sold the item, valued at $206, according to court documents.
Following their investigation, police charged Williams with a felony count of retail theft. That’s nothing new.
Court records showed he has at least 12 prior convictions for retail theft dating back to the 1990s. His record spans at least four counties — Butler, Lawrence, Montgomery and Philadelphia.
Williams’ most recent conviction followed his arrest for swiping two hooded sweatshirts and a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey from the Boscov’s store at the Clearview Mall in Center Township on Dec. 19, 2010, according to records.
He eventually pleaded guilty to a felony charge of retail theft and was sentenced in June 2011 to 11½ to 23 months in the Butler County Prison, followed by 12 months of probation and 50 hours of community service.
While normally a summary or misdemeanor offense, retail theft is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property’s value when a defendant has at least two prior convictions for the same crime.
The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
