Resident concerned about nearby building
ADAMS TWP — A township resident voiced her concerns Monday night that a development may not be following site plans approved by the township.
Susan Kreit lives near the Chinmaya Mission property, an Indian cultural and religious center to be built along Mars Valencia Road that was first brought to the township several years ago.
“I have some questions about their site plan,” Kreit said. “There's just several issues with the code that surfaced.”
Specifically, Kreit is concerned the building being built is larger than it was originally approved for.
The site went through a “series of revisions” from 2016 to 2019, according to Kreit. She said at that time, the building was said to be 12,000 square feet.
But Kreit said when Chinmaya Mission returned to the planning commission in June 2020 with revisions, the building had grown.
“The new square footage put it into a different category of code,” Kreit said. “They're now over 21,000 square feet.”
Kreit stated a larger building should result in a larger buffer zone, according to township code. Kreit said the development has instead disturbed “almost the entire woods behind us.
“That becomes a problem for us as neighbors,” Kreit said.
She indicated the township may not have duly considered the site changes last June, because meetings at that time were virtual.
“Perhaps the site plan wasn't looked at with the diligence required,” Kreit said.
Kreit brought her concerns before the township planning commission, but said she wanted to loop in supervisors as a precaution.
Gary Peaco, township manager, said township staff are researching the approvals granted for the revisions to Chinmaya Mission.
Those approvals will then be cross-checked for compliance on work that's occurred on the site, according to Peaco.
“Even if there was something that was incorrect, we're fairly confident that Chinmaya would work with us,” Peaco said.
Peaco said he's hopeful a resolution, if one is required, will be developed over the next few days.
No Chinmaya Mission representative was identified during the meeting. Because of print deadline, the Eagle was unable to contact a plan representative.
