Woman gets ARD for leaving child

An Evans City woman was placed into the county Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program in Butler County Court Monday, after being charged with leaving an 11-month-old boy unattended in a running vehicle while grocery shopping.

Leela A. Legare, 39, was placed into the program for nine months by Judge William Shaffer.

She was also ordered to complete parenting classes, which her attorney Stephen Misko informed the court had already been completed, and 20 hours of community service.

Legare was charged by Butler Township police with endangering the welfare of children and leaving an unattended child in a motor vehicle after an incident Aug. 23 at ALDI in Butler Commons, according to a criminal complaint.

Police say Legare left an 11-month-old boy in her Honda Odyssey while she was inside the store for about 20 minutes.

Police say the car was left running and unlocked with the windows rolled up, but the air conditioning was not running or was not set appropriately to cool the vehicle.

A township police officer responded and requested that a Butler Ambulance Service unit respond to the lot. Paramedics allegedly found that the child had a low-grade fever.
