Guinness' Book Of Records
BUTLER TWP — Guinness Brown's times are even more impressive considering it's early April.
He still has seven weeks to improve for what he hopes is a decorated trip to the state championship meet.
Along the way, he may continue to turn in school-record efforts, like he did at Art Bernardi Stadium on Thursday.
Butler's junior posted new school standards in the 100-meter dash (10.54 seconds) and 200 dash (21.49) in Butler's dominating wins over Fox Chapel (116-33) and North Hills (117-33).
Both records he topped were his own, including a 10.72 in the 100 he set in the first meet this season.
Brown was hoping for a special spring after he broke school indoor records in the 60, 200 and 400 over the winter.
“But I never expected to be going this fast,” he admitted. “I've always felt I get better the longer I go, that's why I've stuck with the 400.”Brown and Butler coach Mike Seybert both believe that the 400 is his best event — crazy to think about considering his times in the 100 and 200 are currently ranked first in the state.“I'm not running the 400 today, but will be Saturday (in the Butler County Classic),” said Brown. “My goal is to make it to states in all three events.”Seybert believes much more than that could be in store for Brown.“He's very gifted, but also very driven,” he said. “A lot of kids didn't stay sharp when things were shut down last year, but Guinness kept practicing on his own.“When we saw him as a freshman, he was above the norm,” Seybert added, “but the rate he's going at now is just incredible.”Butler's girls also earned lopsided victories, defeating Fox Chapel 118-32 and North Hills 135-15.When asked what stood out for him about his team's efforts, Butler girls coach John Williams replied:“What stood out was right over there,” he said, pointing to the jumping pit where sophomore Megan Baggetta earlier had jumped 36 feet, 7½ inches to win the triple jump.“She came into the season wanting to jump that right off the bat,” Williams added. “You appreciate that out of a kid, but you have to train for it and we didn't have a season last year and didn't compete in indoor over the winter.“Her effort today is great for early April and I know she's looking to improve on it.”Butler's girls produced a pair of double-individual winners. Alli Morrow won the 100 and 200 dash events while Emma Lehman captured both hurdle events. Her time of 16.32 in the 100 hurdles is a career-best.“The 300 has been my best event, but I've improved a lot in the 100,” Lehman said. “I didn't master the form it takes to run the hurdles until this year and I feel I can drop more time the further we go into the season.”Both Butler teams improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in section meets. The Golden Tornado will host the Butler County Classic Saturday before welcoming North Allegheny on Wednesday.
