Sweet Sweep

Butler track teams topple NA, stay undefeated

BUTLER TWP — While the boys were taking care of business, Butler's girls needed a finishing kick.

They got plenty more than one.

The Golden Tornado girls track and field team broke open a close meet in the final four events Wednesday at Art Bernardi Stadium, posting an 88-62 victory over previously unbeaten North Allegheny.

Butler's boys rolled to a 102-48 win, knocking the Tigers out of contention for the WPIAL team championships. Both Butler teams are unbeaten this season.

“We really finished strong,” Tornado girls coach John Williams said. “Our girls just went out and grabbed this.”

Ava Brewster, a freshman, began the late surge by taking third in the 3,200 meters with a personal-record time of 11 minutes, 48 seconds. Megan Penriod tossed the javelin 110 feet, 10 inches on her final throw to win that event.

The long jump was the final girls field event of the day and Ali Morrow and Ali Altman wound up one-two with clutch jumps.

Butler's 4x400 meter relay closed out the meet with a runaway win. Emma Lehman, who won both hurdle events earlier and anchored Butler's winning 4x100 relay, got the 4x400 unit off to a big lead on the first leg.

“Emma had a fantastic meet,” Williams said. “She's become very aggressive. She knows how to take it to another level.”

Lehman recognized the importance of winning events as early as the 100-meter hurdles, the second track event of the day.

“Definitely important,” she said. “We know this is going to be a close meet. Every point counts. Every win is big.”

The Tornado girls had first-place finishes in every field event.“We swept the shot put and those were critical points,” Williams said. “Katie Ban and Alexia Mechling were one-two in the high jump.“That's the kind of stuff that can turn a meet.”Butler's boys did not sweep the field events as NA's Dwayne Taylor claimed the long and triple jumps. But the Tornado won every other individual event, along with two relays.“These kids have been around for a while and they know how this works,” Butler boys coach Mike Seybert said. “They know when to run for times and when to run for team.“They made sure they finished where they needed to today. It's a team thing and they take pride in that.”Guinness Brown won the 100, 200 and 400 meters. CJ Singleton won the 1,600 and 3,200. Teammate Skyler Vavro finished right with him in the 1,600 and won the 800.“That was fun,” Vavro said. “CJ is a great guy to train with. We peeked back to make sure no one was gonna catch us and just finished together.”Singleton's time of 4:33.56 in the 1,600 was far off the school-record time of 4:11 he posted days earlier.“Today was only about winning,” Singleton said. “Skyler and I wanted to go 1-2. Their best runner was a sophomore, so I knew I had the experience edge on him. I wanted to save something for other events in this meet.“Skyler and I push each other. We wouldn't be where we're at right now (in terms of times) if we both weren't here.”Brown owns school records in the 100, 200 and 400. Like Singleton, he wasn't worried about pushing the envelope Wednesday.“There are days to do that and this wasn't one of them,” Brown said. “Today was all about team.”Landon Kretzer won the discus and javelin for Butler.BoysButler 102, North Allegheny 483,200 relay: Butler (Skyler Vavro, Lucas Slear, Sage Vavro, CJ Singleton) 8:15.77; 110 hurdles: Byron Manchester (B) 16.04; 100 dash: Guinness Brown (B) 11.70; 1,600 run: CJ Singleton (B) 4:33.56; 400 run: Guinness Brown (B) 50.13; 400 relay: North Allegheny 45.02; 300 hurdles: Presley Ornelas (B) 42.48; 800 run: Skyler Vavro (B) 1:59.98; 200 dash: Guinness Brown (B) 22.14; 3,200 run: CJ Singleton (B) 9:53.84; 1,600 relay: Butler (Jordan Stutz, Ryder Kriley, Raine Gratzmiller, Lucas Slear) 3:34.87Shot put: Jake Ritzert (B) 41-4; Discus: Landon Kretzer (B) 132-3; Javelin: Landon Kretzer (B) 174-0; High jump: Jordan Stutz (B) 6-0; Long jump: Dwyne Taylor (NA) 21-6; Triple jump: Dwayne Taylor (NA) 43-6.25; Pole vault: Tristan McGarrah (B) 14-0GirlsButler 88, North Allegheny 623,200 relay: North Allegheny (Eva Rynaster, Maura Mlecko, Lexi Sundgren, Rachel Hockenberry) 10:02.39; 100 hurdles: Emma Lehman (B) 16.15; 100 dash: Lola Akindele (NA) 12.9; 1,600 run: Rachel Hockenberry (NA) 5:25.23; 400 run: Makenzie Shannon (NA) 1:00.87; 400 relay: Butler (Taylor Timmons, Ali Morrow, Justine Forbes, Emma Lehman) 50.49; 300 hurdles: Emma Lehman (B) 46.6; 800 run: Eva Kynaston (NA) 2:28.29; 200 dash: Lola Akindele (NA) 25.8; 3,200 run: Eva Kynaston (NA) 11:32.54; 1,600 relay: Butler (Emma Lehman, Taylor Timmons, Justine Forbes, Gabby Boden) 4:04.14Shot put: Kenmna Jackson (B) 32-9; Discus: Sarayne Forbes (B) 119-7; Javelin: Megan Prnrod (B) 110-10; High jump: Katie Ban (B) 5-2 Long jump: Ali Altman (B) 16-8; Triple jump: Megan Bagetta (B) 36-3; Pole vault: Sam Penrod (B) 10-0
