Development set for next step
CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Springs development, which includes the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, is expected to take another step toward construction next week.
The development is along Route 228 and borders Interstate 79 near the new ramps that are under construction.
The township supervisors are poised to vote next Thursday on the final subdivision and preliminary land development plans of the complex.
The final conditional use application, which puts additional requirements for development on the plan, will be voted on in Dec. 5.
The developers said they will make final application for the first phase of the project, which includes the two ice rinks and sports medicine facility, in the next month or two.
An official groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this month on the complex even though the final township land development approvals are still pending.
The complex is projected to be opened by the summer of 2015. It combines hockey rinks and training facilities with 50,000 square feet of clinical space that will be used for medical purposes.
The entire facility is designed to be more than 190,000 square feet, complete with two ice rinks. One of those will be used by the Penguins for practice, while the other will be for youth hockey, ice skating or other community events.
There also will be 16,200 square feet of retail, 30,000 square feet of restaurants and a 59,650-square-foot hotel planned in the first phase of two phases.
Plans for the second phase are unknown, said Jim Venture, engineer for PVE Venture representing Cranberry Springs, at the supervisors’ meeting Thursday.
Venture said the only part of the first phase of development that is finalized and ready to go is the sports complex.
