Pull for Philly? Not a chance

OK, this one's a no-brainer.

In a Stanley Cup Final pitting the Philadelphia Flyers against the Chicago Blackhawks, there is only one team Pittsburgh hockey fans can possibly root for.

Yet some Penguins fans have been calling radio talk shows to suggest that we in the 'Burgh pull for our cross-state brethren to win it all.

Surely, they're kidding.

They have to be.

Their argument is that if the Flyers win the Stanley Cup, Pennsylvania could be hailed as the Commonwealth of Champions, given the Steelers' and Penguins' titles from last year, the Phillies' consecutive World Series berths and a Flyers hockey crown.

Commonwealth of Champions?

Seriously?

The last thing any self-respecting Pittsburgh sports fan should want to do is share anything with the city of Philadelphia.

What do we do next? Claim Michael Vick as one of our own?

The Flyers should be hated — OK, maybe extremely disliked — in this town. Bobby Clarke was one of the most despised out-of-town players to skate on Mellon Arena ice.

Remember the Spectrum? The Penguins didn't win a game there in forever.

Flyers goalie Ron Hextall chased Pens forward Rob Brown halfway across the ice because Brown did his signature windmill after scoring on Hextall during the playoffs.

Flyers fans have a nonstop, rather tasteless chant for Sidney Crosby every time the Penguins visit the Wachovia Center these days.

We're supposed to pull for those guys to win the Cup, just to keep Lord Stanley in Pennsylvania for another year?

No way. Head for the Land of Lincoln. I was born in Illinois. It's not such a bad place.

Yes, Marian Hossa skates for the Blackhawks. Yes, Hossa bailed on the Penguins because he felt he stood a better chance of winning with Detroit, the team that beat the Pens in six games in the 2008 finals.

Hossa met an embarrassing fate when his Red Wings lost in seven games to the Penguins last year — and he failed to score a goal in the series.

Hey, the man has served his sentence for leaving us. Penguins fans got their sweet revenge on him last year.

It's time to move on.

Let Hossa finally get his name on the Cup. Chicago hasn't won the thing since 1961. Their fans have waited long enough.

Anything but the Flyers. The Broad Street Bullies need not be revisited.

Any Penguins fan caught rooting for Philly should have his or her Pittsburgh sports fan rights revoked.

Ohio State fans do not root for Michigan. Pitt fans do not root for Penn State. Red Sox fans don't root for the Yankees and Dodgers fans don't root for the Giants.

Penguin fans rooting for the Flyers would be like Steelers fans rooting for the Browns.

Perish the thought. Such betrayal just isn't done.

Go home, Flyers.

Let's go, 'Hawks!
