SLIPPERY ROCK — The anonymous donor who has paid rental fees for the Slippery Rock Community Library for the past few years will not pay next year.

John Hines, a Slippery Rock Township supervisor and a Slippery Rock Park board member who is a friend of the donor, said that the donor withdrew from paying for 2014. He said that the donor hopes start again in 2015.

The library has been in Slippery Rock Park since 2005. It paid no rent until late 2009, when the park board asked it to help cover the building’s maintenance and utility fees.

It pays $900 per year, which averages $75 a month.

“We’re very grateful for the person’s generosity over the past few years,” said Jan Forrest, Friends of the Slippery Rock Library president.

She noted that this does not put the library in dire straits, but it is still money that has to be paid.

“We’ll have to take it our of someplace else (in the budget),” Forrest said.

She said that the library hopes to buy a digital projector to show movies, but she said it is possible that it may not be able to buy it now.

She noted that all of the library’s income comes from donations, which can make budgeting difficult.

“We have no guaranteed income,” Forrest said.

The friends group is working on raising money for a new library building. However, Forrest said that money specifically is allocated for the building and cannot be used elsewhere in the budget.

“That’s totally separate,” Forrest said.

The library has 4,000 books, two public computers and wireless Internet. It averages around 800 patrons per month with 1,200 items checked out per month.

“We have to work for every dollar we get, but we’re flourishing,” Forrest said.

Founded in 1981, the library covers all the communities in the Slippery Rock School District, except Prospect, which has its own library.
