Manager of state parks discusses plans with group

FRANKLIN TWP — Dustin Drew did not come to Moraine State Park to shake things up.

“I really didn’t come here, to the position, with any kind of agenda,” said Drew, who has been the manager of Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks since July.

Drew spoke Wednesday at a meeting of 3MJC, a friends group for Moraine and McConnells Mill and for the Jennings Environmental Education Center.

He said his goals include continuing to rehabilitate park infrastructure. This includes putting in concrete board siding on buildings, which is more durable than wood or concrete block siding.

Drew also wants to maintain relationships with outside groups, such as 3MJC, and check on invasive species.

He said crews have done additional grass cutting around water and sewer lines, which makes it easier to fix leaks and keeps invasive species away.

His position does not come without challenges, a primary one being limited funds. He said the parks only get so much state money for so many projects.

“That’s always a challenge,” Drew said.

Projects get funded, but he said the parks can only do so much with what they get, so projects have to be prioritized.

A big project planned for the park is the rehabilitation of sewage lines at the Pleasant Valley Beach area.

It has been bid out, but it has not had the go ahead from the state.

“So, it’s kind of in limbo,” Drew said.

He hopes the project will happen in the spring, but he could not say for sure.

Other upcoming projects include rehabilitation to the exterior of the Lakeview Beach change house and the replacement of windows in the Moraine office to make it more energy efficient.

Drew said the food concessions in the park are out for bid, and the bids will be opened in Harrisburg later this month. Concessions used to be bid every 10 years, but Drew said they now will be bid every 5 years to attract more bidders.
